Abstract

Transition from lower to upper primary is challenging both to teachers and learners, especially in a context where that transition involves switching from one language of instruction to another. As learners struggle to master the language of instruction and the subject content, teachers similarly struggle to find suitable methods that would enhance learners‟ understanding. This challenging situation requires massive support from the head teacher. This study sought to explore the role of the head teacher in supporting teachers to enhance language competences among the learners transiting from lower to upper primary. The study adopted a qualitative case study design and data was collected from 11 research participants through semi- structured interviews, focus group discussion and document analysis. Data from the semi-structured interview and focus group discussion was transcribed, coded and developed into themes and sub-themes in order to derive meaning from it. The study found that the head teacher plays an important role in supporting teachers to enhance language competences among the learners transiting from lower to upper primary. Among the roles the head teacher plays are provision of teaching and learning resources, providing support supervision for teachers, team work and promoting school based initiatives such as debates to promote the use of English language among learners and teachers. Executing these roles does not go without challenges though. Among the challenges were limited funds, non-compliant teachers, learners‟ absenteeism and parents‟ low support.
