Abstract

Teacher education programs play a pivotal role in teachers’ professional development. In the realm of education, the quality of students' learning depends upon the teacher's quality, the teacher's quality depends upon the subject-matter knowledge and pedagogical skills, and the pedagogical skills depend upon the quality of the teacher education program. Due to low teacher quality questions are raised about the extent to which teachers in Pakistan understand and uphold the professional standards in their practices. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the secondary (B. Ed 1.5 years) teachers’ pedagogical skills in public and private schools in one of the districts in Gilgit Baltistan.
However, it is noteworthy that a statistically significant number of private school teachers were found to be maintaining better classroom norms and making proper lesson planning for the lesson than public system teachers (p-value < 0.05). Furthermore, the study also showed a significant difference in using co-operative learning and students’ self-evaluation approaches (p-value < 0.05) as the private-school teachers demonstrated better in using co-operative learning approach and student evaluation approach where students evaluated their learning.
Based on the results of the study, the study suggests that student-centered teaching methods should be prioritized by incorporating supplementary and digital tools. It is also recommended for teacher education institutions to strengthen their curriculum to equip teachers with digital skills. This study also emphasizes the institutions to conduct more professional development sessions and workshops for in-service teachers.
