Abstract

The quality of teaching is affected by both teachers' skills and their working environment, where demanding schedules, from early mornings to late evenings with academic and non-academic tasks, leave little time for self-care, resulting in stress, exhaustion, and reduced motivation that affect educational quality. Although previous studies focused on workload, but understanding its intensity is essential. Therefore, this study measures workload and its consequences on the motivation, physical and mental well-being of private schools teachers in Karachi, Pakistan. The researcher developed the Teacher Time Use App and conducted a quantitative cross-sectional survey to measure teachers' workloads throughout the school day.  
Data was collected from 111 elementary school teachers through social media, with additional qualitative feedback from 67 teachers. The application tracked task quantity, consequences on well-being, and motivation throughout the day. Quantitative data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, while qualitative feedback was examined through thematic coding to identify workload patterns. The results showed that teachers completed nearly double the expected number of tasks, a total of 1,077 tasks in five hours while spending 59.5% of their time in multitasking. This heavy workload decreased motivation, affecting physical and mental well-being as the day progressed. It also found that the application serves as an effective tool for analyzing teachers' workload and their consequences, hence improving teacher well-being and educational quality. The study recommends that teachers improve time management, school leaders organize timetables, implement wellbeings programs, and policymakers revise workload-related policies to create a more sustainable work environment.
