Abstract

The growth of tuition centers in Karachi has developed a rising trend that has obtained striking control in the recent years. Due to increasing demand for high-quality education and tough competition for admission to renowned universities, these centers have gained considerable dominance as parents and students refer to tuition centers for additional support and to enhance students’ learning. The students’ motive behind turning towards tuition centers, especially for mathematics are fourfold: first, the perceived gap between teaching at school and at tuition center; second, gaining better conceptual understanding; third, to practice CIE past paper with well qualified teachers and lastly, parental pressure to achieve academic excellence. 
This research paper examined the growing trend of tuition centers in Karachi, focusing on its effects on the academic performance of struggling students in Mathematics at an O'level. It explored how tuition centers identify academically struggling students, and how the strategies to support them are developed, implemented, and evaluated. To conduct the study, an exploratory research approach was adopted, focusing two tuition centers from different areas of Karachi. The participants in the survey included tutors, students, and their parents. The study comprised two tuition centers referred to as tuition centers A and B with each center having one teacher, a group of six students, and two parents. Semi-structured interviews with parents and teachers whereas focus group interviews with students were conducted.  Research findings show that students and their parents were satisfied with the strategies and approaches these tutors apply for academically struggling students during their O-level exam preparation.  Moreover, students who want to maintain their grades to secure admission to prestigious universities also join tuition centers. This research was conducted with tuition centers in Karachi only therefore, other areas should also be explored to gather further insights into effective strategies and challenges. Comparative studies help understand how these centers adapt to local needs.
