Abstract
This dissertation investigated the role of headteachers in promoting gender equality within primary schools, focusing on the context of Koboko District, Uganda. The study addressed the background and context of gender inequality significant in education, formulated research questions, and delineated study objectives to explore headteachers' contributions comprehensively.
The study aimed to analyze the structural measures and initiatives implemented by headteachers to address and promote gender equality within primary schools in Koboko District, Uganda, identify and assess the challenges they face in these endeavours, focusing on specific barriers and constraints, and examine the strategies utilized by headteachers to actively promote gender equality within their school counselling methods they employ to create an inclusive educational environment.
The research employed mixed methods including interviews, and document analysis to delve into the strategies, challenges, and effectiveness of headteachers' initiatives. It unfolded the significance of gender-inclusive teaching practices, equitable resource allocation, leadership opportunities, and guidance and counselling programs in fostering gender equality.
Findings illuminated the complex dynamics of gender equality in primary education, emphasizing the critical role of headteachers in shaping an inclusive educational environment. Policy implications underscore the need for gender-sensitive financial frameworks and targeted interventions to address parental attitudes and enrolment disparities. Practice recommendations advocated for gender-inclusive teaching materials and enhanced guidance and counselling programs, while research recommendations highlighted the importance of longitudinal studies to assess intervention effectiveness.
In conclusion, the study underscored the ongoing journey towards gender equality in primary education, emphasizing the need for sustained and collaborative efforts to overcome persistent challenges and create an educational environment that fosters equal opportunities for all students in Koboko District, Uganda.
