Abstract
This study investigated the teachers' use of oral questioning practices, and challenges in developing oral communication skills (OCS) among secondary school students in Sumbawanga Municipality. A qualitative approach was used to explore the use of oral questioning practices in enhancing OCS. A case study design was employed to focus on one secondary school. A purposive sampling technique was used to obtain one experienced English teacher, and nine students from one class as they had been using Kiswahili in primary school as a medium of instruction, and when the study was conducted, they were in their first year of secondary education and experiencing English as the medium of instruction. Moreover, the researcher used a semi-structured interview, focus group discussion, and classroom observation for data collection. Data were manually analyzed through thematic analysis. The study found that the teacher mostly used group discussion without formal formation. They also used a reading aloud method to students. On the challenges, there was a severe shortage of teaching and learning resources, Kiswahili and other vernacular languages hampered the smooth enhancement of English language OCS. Moreover, there was a lack of electricity, insufficient teacher support, motivation, and the student-teacher relationship had negative consequences on the enhancement of OCS. Overcrowded classrooms and inadequate teaching methodology hampered the development of students’ skills. The findings have implications for educational policy, teacher education, and classroom practices. Teachers should improvise and use teaching and learning resources. Moreover, they should motivate students, be friendly in terms of language use, and there should be a reasonable number of students in the class. Moreover, the study emphasizes the use of other alternative sources of energy such as solar energy, and generators. This study emphasizes further research on the OCS enhancement that fits the 21st Century and the challenges that can face the enhancement of oral communication skills in other places.
