Abstract
This research investigates the factors influencing students' decisions to pursue science specializations, addressing the pressing issue of declining interest in sciencerelated careers. There is a world-worrying trend in students’ declining interest in sciencerelated occupations, hence the need to understand the factors influencing students' motivations to pursue science. The research employed a quantitative approach with a survey design, utilizing structured questionnaires administered to science teachers, Form Three students choosing science and non-science specializations, and Form Five students committed to study science, and the study was guided by Goal Oriented Theory. The data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software. The findings reveal several factors in students' motivations, with 25% driven by intrinsic curiosity and passion for science, Career aspirations tied to science specializations constituting 23%, emphasizing the instrumental role of science in shaping professional trajectories, and Family influence at 17% underscores the impact of familial guidance on educational choices. Drawing on existing literature, the study explores various factors, including science enjoyment, future orientation toward science, classroom activities, and attitudes toward science, that shape students' decisions regarding science specializations. However, a comprehensive understanding of the underlying factors is still not exhaustively identified. Therefore, this research focused on students who are positively motivated to undertake science specializations. The research contributes to fostering the next generation of scientists and innovators, addressing global challenges through enhanced science education. The research concluded with recommendations for enhancing students' pursuit of science specializations, including prioritizing practical application, encouraging student involvement in projects, fostering collaboration, and providing guidance and counseling services. Furthermore, the study suggests avenues for future research, including exploring the intersectionality of factors across diverse demographic groups, investigating the longitudinal impact of interventions on sustained interest and success in science education, and conducting comparative analyses of science education systems globally.
