Abstract

This study explored the role of music in improving the teaching of Poetry. Employing a Qualitative approach through Action Research design, the study utilized interviews, classroom observations, focus group discussions, and document analysis to gather data on students' responses to the music integration, teacher challenges, and strategies for overcoming them. The study found that music increased engagement, interest, and emotional connection, but challenges like lack of gadgets, administrative support, and infrastructure were addressed through strategies like providing technology, involving students, and incorporating diverse genres. These results suggest valuable contributions to the development of innovative pedagogical approaches that seamlessly integrate music and poetry education in Ugandan secondary schools. Ultimately, such efforts aim to enrich students' learning experiences and elevate their academic achievements. Recommendations include a shift towards student-centred practices, music integration training for teachers, collaboration between poetry and music educators, and the incorporation of music into curriculum development. Integrating music into poetry teaching emerges as a powerful tool for promoting active learning, igniting emotional expression, and cultivating a lifelong appreciation for poetry in Ugandan secondary schools.
