Abstract
This study investigated the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in teaching and learning communication skills at a teachers' college in Kigoma, Tanzania. An action research methodology was used to gain insights from tutors and student teachers. In the reconnaissance stage, observations and a pre-test revealed lack of AI integration and below-average searching skills. The intervention involved introducing ChatGPT, an AI assistant, to augment instruction. Over eight sessions, tutors and students used ChatGPT for asking questions, finding contents for teaching and learning, and facilitating several classroom discussions. The overall perceptions from the tutors and student teachers were positive, noting increased accessibility, engagement, and efficiency. However, challenges including depending on the internet in accessing and using ChatGPT and potential over-reliance on ChatGPT might reduce the user’s thinking capacity. The evaluation assessed impacts through interviews, focus groups, and a post-test. Findings showed improved questioning skills, lesson planning assistance for tutors, and a more collaborative environment. To address these challenges, recommendations included establishing computer labs, providing free Wi-Fi, provision of education on proper use of ChatGPT and ensuring precision in querying ChatGPT. The study concluded that AI has transformative potential when used strategically as a supplemental tool. With accessible technology and thoughtful integration guided by continual assessment, AI can enhance learning experiences and empower self-directed education.
