Abstract

Background: Dental education is essential for building clinical competence for future dental graduates. However, assessing dental learners' clinical skills can be difficult. Dental assessment is an important part of dental education since it shows a learner's ability to achieve educational goals. Therefore, the principal factors contributing to insufficient crown preparation include insufficient occlusal and axial reduction, excessive wall taper and reduced retention. To address these difficulties, this study was carried out. The purpose of this study is the development and validation of the CPOSATS tool for the assessment of the crown preparation skills of dental interns posted in the department of prosthodontics at Hamdard University Dental Hospital.
Methods: A pilot study with a validation study design having two parts, tool development and validation. The site of the research was the department of prosthodontics at Hamdard University Dental Hospital. After obtaining ethical approvals, the study was carried on for six months. The sample size consisted of 30 dental interns. The sampling method was non-probability purposive sampling. Inclusion criteria include graduates doing internships at HUDH and participants consenting to participate, and exclusion criteria dental interns do not consent to volunteer.
Results: Cronbach's alpha of 0.910 and 0.909 for raters 1 and 2 respectively show excellent internal consistency. ICC-A show 0.948 [95% CI 0.918–0.972] respectively show excellent consistency and excellent inter-rater reliability. Most items show good to excellent reliability with significant p-values (< 0.001).
Conclusion: The study's findings revealed that the CPOSATS tool is a valid and reliable tool for assessing crown preparation skills among dental interns at Hamdard University Dental Hospital. Excellent interrater reliability, great statistical significance, and good internal consistency were all displayed by both raters. Future study can expand on this method to conduct more in-depth research.
