Abstract

Introduction: Pakistan possesses a highly multicultural demographic, and thus dental students are likely to encounter culturally and linguistically diverse individuals regularly. The evolving dental healthcare landscape necessitates a focus on CC in undergraduate dental curricula. This study aims to explore the effect of intervention of Cultural Competency workshops on the pre and post workshop self-assessment scores of final year undergraduate dental students using a self- assessment modified HPCCI tool at Fatima Memorial College of Medicine & Dentistry Lahore (FMHCMD).
Method: The study employs Pre-Post Interventional Quasi-experimental design. Following ethical approval, anonymous questionnaire was completed by seventy-six undergraduate dental students. The survey tool used was Validated Self-Assessment CC Pre and Post Workshop Data Survey adapted from Modified Schwarz's Healthcare Provider Cultural Competence Instrument (HPCCI) consisted of five scales. The data analysis involved the application of paired sample t-test, mean and standard deviation to assess the difference between Pre-Post workshops surveys mean score using SPSS V 24.0 software.
Results: Results demonstrated a significant overall increase in the mean score of self-assessment post-workshop questionnaire. Sections B, C, D, E exhibited statistically significant p < 0.05, while Section F showed less p > 0.05. Feedback from the unstructured reflective section affirmed the workshop's utility and relevance to dental practices.
Conclusion: The study showcased the positive effect of the CC workshop intervention. The post-workshop self-assessment scores revealed significant improvement on students perception and beliefs, regarding cultural competence. The workshop has provided a platform for continuous CC teaching in the undergraduate dental curriculum, ensuring that students are better prepared to address cultural diversity and deliver sensitive and inclusive dental care.
