Abstract

Introduction: Bolan Medical College (BMC) is the pioneer medical college of Balochistan province, which was established in 1972 to tackle the health issues and produce manpower for the health sectors of the province. Bolan Medical College was upgraded into medical university “Bolan University of Medical and Health Sciences” (BUMHS) in 2017 to bring the entire medical, dental, nursing and paramedical education under one roof for better coordination and uniform evaluation aiming to achieve excellence in the fields of medical professions. The National Licensing Exam (NLE) results of the year 2022 showed that the passing percentage of the dental graduates from Bolan Medical College appearing in NLE is only 52%. The subpar performance of BMC's dental graduates in the NLE raises critical questions regarding the effectiveness of the educational practices and resources utilized within the college.
Research Methods: This study explored the faculty’s change readiness and identified the factors that are needed to be addressed for ensuring a smooth transition to improved educational delivery. This qualitative study was conducted during September 2024. The faculty perceptions were explored through one-to-one semi-structured interviews and focused group discussion (FGD). Four interviews and an FGD with eight participants were employed for data collection. The primary researcher conducted the interviews and FGD using a pre-designed question guide and used probes for generating in-depth discussions during data collection. The interviews and FGD were recorded and transcribed according to the guidelines established by the ERB.
Results: Using transcription notes, a thematic analysis was performed on each of the four interviews and FGD. The analysis was done by the primary researcher. Software Atlas.ti 24 (licensed version) was used to assist the analysis. The analysis of codes, categories, and themes highlights several key areas that need to be addressed to enhance dental faculty change readiness at Bolan Medical College.
Conclusion: Institutional factors, including resource availability and teaching methods, present significant barriers that need to be overcome. Understanding the socio-cultural background of students is crucial for developing effective educational strategies. Finally, robust faculty development programs are essential for fostering a culture of readiness for change and continuous improvement.
