Abstract

Vocabulary acquisition in language classrooms is mostly taught in traditional ways like rote memorization and repetitive exercises, often resulting in limited student engagement and purposeful learning. In response to those practices, this action research study investigated Game-Based learning (GBL) as an innovative and effective approach to enhance students' motivation, participation, and vocabulary acquisition among Grade 5 students in private and public schools of Gilgit Baltistan.
This study adopted mixed-method designs. Qualitative data were taken through classroom observations, focused group discussions (FGDs) with students, and English teachers' interviews. At the same time, pre- and post-tests were administered to assess the impact of the intervention. Over a three-week intervention, educational games were incorporated into English language lessons to foster active learning. Findings revealed a modest but substantively relevant improvement in students’  vocabulary performance, alongside noticeable increases in motivation, engagement, and collaboration. Differences between public and private school contexts suggested that factors such as teacher readiness, digital literacy, and access to resources influenced the success of GBL implementation. The study concludes that while GBL offers a promising alternative to traditional vocabulary teaching methods, its effectiveness depends on contextual and infrastructural support within schools.
