Abstract
This qualitative study investigates the perceptions and practices of primary caregivers regarding early childhood development and learning in Booni, Upper Chitral. Through interviews, observations, and field notes, the research explores how caregivers view their roles in nurturing young children, emphasizing both traditional and current caregiving approaches. The study identifies key child-rearing routines, including structured daily activities, religious and academic education, and outdoor play, highlighting the balance caregivers strive to maintain between cultural values and contemporary child development needs.
The findings reveal significant challenges faced by caregivers, such as managing the impact of mobile phone usage, concerns over unhealthy foods, and the complexities of caregiving within joint family systems. Environmental factors, like harsh winter conditions, and socio-economic constraints further complicate caregiving efforts, affecting children's health and development. Cultural beliefs and practices continue to shape parenting approaches, yet there is a noticeable decline in traditional games, driven by safety concerns and shifting environmental conditions.
The study underscores the importance of enhancing early childhood education programs that integrate traditional and current practices, promoting equitable caregiving roles within families, and developing safe play spaces for children. The research also calls for financial support and resources to alleviate economic burdens on caregivers, alongside community initiatives to promote healthy eating habits. By addressing these factors, the study offers valuable insights into the unique socio-cultural dynamics of caregiving in Booni, Upper Chitral, and suggests pathways for future support and development in this region.
