Abstract
Various school transitions provide students with both challenges and opportunities. How students cope with these challenges impacts their learning. This study was conducted in a private school in the Gilgit region. The study investigated learning difficulties faced by the students who moved to secondary school after completing their Grade 5 level education in primary school. Further, the study explored the relevance and effectiveness of instructional strategies to help students bridge their knowledge gap and cope with learning advanced-level content knowledge in science classrooms. The research was conducted using the action research method, which consisted of three phases, i.e., pre-action, action, and post-action. In the reconnaissance phase, problems were identified through interviews with the science class teacher, focus group discussions with students, pre-tests, and pre-observations of lessons in science class. The intervention phase comprised three cycles; each cycle used a different instructional strategy to teach students scientific concepts effectively. The post-action of post-test, post-discussions, and post-interview reflected a significant improvement in learning scientific concepts. The study's findings suggest that the students can cope with the challenges with the teacher's support with multiple instructional strategies like teaching one concept with different methods and building interactions with the teacher and other students in classroom settings to learn from each other. Finally, it further recommends that science teachers use multiple strategies for teaching science subjects, for example, extending opportunities for critical thinking, like imagination, for abstract concepts to think about and share ideas. Further, the school must address the challenges through teacher training, seminars, and conferences to improve teaching and learning.
