Abstract
This chapter explores the historical perspectives of family medicine in sub-Saharan Africa alongside its core values. Family medicine, a relatively new specialty in this region, has seen significant growth in recent decades, with increasing integration into undergraduate and postgraduate curricula. As family medicine continues to evolve and develop as a specialty, it needs an identity defined by contextual core values and principles. A description of the core values central to family medicine in Africa and their utility is made. The chapter concludes that there are different family medicine practice models across the region, but the core values and principles appear to be the same, embedded within the African culture, giving family medicine and family physicians a unique identity and definition.
