Abstract

This chapter explores the complex relationship between Islamic education and liberal democracy. It examines the system goals and development of each construct in light of globalisation and emerging technologies. The concept of ‘Islamic education’ itself is debated, noting a false divide between secular and religious aspects of life. The chapter highlights the need for clear definitions to avoid misunderstandings and facilitate a dialogical approach. Debates on how the Islamic world and the West approach education and governance require a deeper understanding of both historical and contemporary perspectives to bridge apparent divides and promote a more informed discussion. The chapter concludes by emphasising the importance of developing strong critical thinking skills in all learners.
