Abstract
I first met Richard Pring in 2002 to discuss my DPhil proposal with him. I was interested in exploring the theoretical foundations of education in Muslim schools. Halfway through the meeting I knew I should work with Richard; and, indeed, studying under his supervision turned out to be one of the most valued intellectual journeys of my life. Richard was what a supervisor should ideally be: critical, insightful, encouraging and, in the end, a friend. We remained in touch after my doctorate and I have continued to benefit from his sagacity, wit and insights. It is thus a pleasure to write a chapter in his honour.
