Abstract
This chapter provides a brief historical description of education before independence and a critical overview of educational policy reform in Tanzania after independence. The chapter reveals latent factors that continue to affect educational policy and implementation, some of which emanated from experiences before independence and others that are function of our efforts to ‘catch up’ to the education systems of the developed world.
