Abstract
This chapter looks at why, despite the fact that Kiswahili is Tanzania's national language and that the language has been used as the medium of instruction in primary school level for more than four decades, it has not been phased in as an official medium of instruction in post-primary level of schooling. It also looks at some challenges in the teaching and learning of mathematics that came about as a result of the change in the medium of instruction from English to Kiswahili at primary school level.
