Increase awareness to a street school children: a project of public health intervention by nursing students

Abstract

Background: Students of Shifa College of Nursing carried out community based projects to address health problems in the community and apply Health Promotion Disease Prevention (HPDP) health models in the community health practice among the various age groups. Students had done their project in the school of street going children .Before the commencing the project students did need assessment According to Cavanagh, S & Chadwick K, (2005) “Health needs assessment is a systematic method for reviewing the health issues facing a population, leading to agreed priorities and resource allocation that will improve health and reduce inequalities. .Student had gone through all the steps of need assessment and applied public health intervention at Community, Systems and Individual/family level. Perform physical examination to screen out the children.  Identify their health issues.  Identify the ways to prevent health issues at primary level.  Increase awareness regarding health issues through different public health intervention.

Methods: Project conducted at a street school run by an NGO .18 students participated as a part of their CHN module. The students conducted health screening of 200 students. After prioritizing the need students had worked on action plan with the help of literature review .Students had selected few public health intervention like health education , counseling etc .KAP study was then done with pre & post intervention survey where knowledge , attitude , practice regarding identified needs were established .

Results: Health need assessment was done through screening and referred the identified cases to clinic. Four priority issues were identified .Students had worked on individual health project on identified need by utilizing public health intervention wheel and at the end evaluation was carried out and it was found that most of the families were applying knowledge into practice

Conclusions: Health need assessment strengthened community involvement in decision making. Public health nursing at the community and systems practice levels as well as the conventional individual/family level was very beneficial
