Abstract

The use of audio visual aids in teaching of English language in secondary schools should be understood as necessary aids that has an impact on students’ learning. Audio visual aids are well understood as rich sources for teaching English language. However, the role of the teacher in using these resources needs not to be emphasized. The study sought to investigate teachers’ practices on the use of audio visual aids in teaching of English language in public secondary school in Tanga municipality. Case study design was used to investigate the phenomenon. The sample of the study consisted of two teachers and two students from a public secondary school. The data was gathered through interviews, observation and document analysis. The finding of the study show that teachers use variety of strategies in using the limited audio visual aids available in the school. Despite the benefits of using audio visual aids, teachers face a number of challenges that limit them in the use of these audio visual aids. To make effective and efficient use of audio visual aids in teaching English language, it is suggested that more efforts should be put in training teachers and in providing essential facilities that would enhance their use.
