Abstract
This paper presents the background policy directions in Australia that are encouraging nurses to initiate alcohol early intervention strategies. The current clinical initiatives that are supporting screening and early intervention strategies are critically reviewed and presented in the form of an Alcohol Early Intervention Model to guide nursing practice. The model is compatible with current directions in nursing which encourage more independent, empowering and educationally focused strategies. This model also provides direction for undergraduate and graduate nursing curricula and offers opportunities for future research.
