Abstract
Introduction: The importance of including palliative care early in the management of chronic and lifethreatening illnesses has been recognized. Yet, many individuals in need either have no access or receive palliative care only during the final stages of their illness. Thus, they suffer from severe symptoms and experience agony.
Objectives: This research explored nurses' perspectives regarding access to palliative care at a tertiary care facility. Including facilitators and barriers that impact the delivery of palliative care.
Method: A qualitative study design was used. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews with a diverse sample of 12 nurses from various departments within a tertiary care facility. Participants were selected through purposive sampling methods to ensure a range of experiences and perspectives. All the interviews were conducted in person, audio-recorded and were analyzed into different themes.
Results: The research participants had a clear definition of palliative care. Barriers they identified for access to palliative care, included geographical challenges, financial constraints, and resource limitations; including shortages of nursing personnel, unavailability of essential medications like morphine, and the absence of palliative care in the nursing curriculum. Systemic challenges, including a lack of public acceptance and the absence of a contextual framework for palliative care, have further exacerbated the issue. To enhance access to palliative care, nurses recommended the implementation of telehealth services, social media campaigns to raise awareness, increased public and welfare support, and the inclusion of palliative care in nursing education.
Conclusions: Currently, in Pakistan, access to palliative care is very limited. Very few hospitals are offering palliative care services. Overcoming barriers and introducing palliative care early in the management of chronic and life-threatening illnesses is important for improving the quality of life of patients and their families.
