Abstract

Background: Assertiveness is essential in nursing to facilitate effective communication, patient advocacy and professional resilience. Assertiveness is linked to clinical performance and patient care quality among nursing students. Hence, its influence on academic performance becomes important. This is less explored area within Pakistani nursing education. Therefore, investigating this relationship could provide insights into how assertiveness impacts both academic success and clinical practice readiness.
Purpose: This study examined the relationship between assertiveness and academic performance among undergraduate nursing students in two private colleges in Lahore, Pakistan.
Method: In this study, a cross-sectional design was used to examine the relationship between assertiveness and academic performance, as measured by academic scores, among 309 nursing students. The Rathus Assertiveness Schedule (RAS) was utilized to assess assertiveness levels. A non-probability proportional quota sampling method was applied to ensure diversity in the demographic makeup of participants. Statistical analyses, including ANOVA and Pearson correlation, were performed using SPSS to explore associations and assess mean score differences across various demographic groups.
Findings: Results indicated a weak, non-significant correlation between assertiveness and academic performance, suggesting that although assertiveness is critical for professional practice, it may not directly impact academic metrics such as academic scores. A significant difference in assertiveness was found based on marital status, with unmarried students showing higher assertiveness levels.
Conclusion: Although assertiveness did not show a strong link to academic performance, integrating assertiveness training into nursing curricula could support students‘ professional development. Such programs have proven effective in improving communication, confidence, and stress management. Future research should adopt longitudinal approaches to examine assertiveness and academic outcomes over time, incorporating additional factors such as emotional intelligence. Despite limitations in sample size and data collection methods, this study contributes to understanding the role of assertiveness in nursing education in Pakistan.
