Abstract

Background: Purposeful effective communication is essential to the success of all human relationships. The use of language in communication enables people to share important information, as well as express their needs and feelings. Nurses are an essential component of any healthcare system. The quality of care a nurse provides depends on the communication between nurses and patients. Patient-nurse communication is two-way. Effective communication cannot occur if either party does not understand the other's information. Language barriers hinder nurses from providing quality care to their patients. This study is conducted in Pakistan. Pakistan is a multilingual country, where approximately languages are spoken. This study aimed to determine the impact of the language barrier on the nurses’ provision of nursing care to patients in the critical care areas of a private tertiary care hospital in Karachi, Pakistan.
/="/">Methodology: A qualitative exploratory study design was used. Through purposive sampling, from the critical care areas in a tertiary care hospital in Karachi, Pakistan, 10 nurses participated in this research. A semi structured interview guide was used to explore their perspectives and experiences. Participants’ in-depth interviews were audio recorded, transcribed, and analyzed.
/="/">Findings: Five themes, “Frequency of encountering language barriers in the critical care areas”, “Rendering Nursing care”, “Patients and healthcare providers' feelings due to the language barrier”, “Practice strategies”, and “Recommendation by participants”, were identified. Language barriers can hinder patient care due to insufficient communication and it can reduce patient satisfaction.
/="/">Conclusion: When linguistic barriers exist, certain information cannot be shared with others, but it is essential for assessing patient requirements and planning, implementing, and evaluating care in healthcare. Language restrictions impair patient care. Nurses who worked in critical care areas and faced communication problems reported lesser job and patient satisfaction. The findings of this study can provide baseline information to find ways to minimize these barriers.
