Abstract
Background: Post-stroke cognitive impairment (PSCI) is a common, yet under-recognized complication of stroke. It significantly impairs patients' functionality and quality of life. In Pakistan, where resources are limited, it is imperative to educate healthcare professionals about PSCI, so it can be recognised and managed early during the disease course. Since nurses play a key role in the rehabilitation of stroke patients, they must get structured education about PSCI to bridge the knowledge gap.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a module, Cognicare, in improving nurses’ knowledge and perceptions about post-stroke cognitive impairment in a University Hospital in Karachi, Pakistan.
Method: A quantitative pre-test post-test study design was utilised to fulfill the purpose of this study. A total of 111 registered nurses from the department of medicine and the home health service department were inducted through purposive sampling. Data was collected through a questionnaire that asked for demographic details, knowledge-based questions, perception-based questions, and evaluation of the module. Cognicare was adopted from the Lippincott Professional Development Collection. The questionnaire and module were validated by the content experts. Data was analysed descriptively and inferentially (paired t-test) using IBM SPSS version 19.
Finding(s): The findings revealed that there was a significant improvement in knowledge scores (p=0.008), and perception scores (p=0.002) after studying the Cognicare module. Evaluation scores of the module revealed that the majority of the participants were satisfied with the module and found it relevant to their clinical practice.
Conclusion: The Cognicare module improved nurses' knowledge and perceptions about PSCI. Such integrated and comprehensive educational strategies must be incorporated in clinical practice, so nurses can stay updated with the current guidelines and improve their practices.
