Abstract

Background: The need for palliative care is increasing, and nurses are required to be knowledgeable to fulfil this need. However, palliative care is not included in all nursing curriculum, but this gap can be filled through an education module. This research focused on providing education to nurses working in a tertiary care hospital in Pakistan, which is among the low-and middle income countries.
Purpose: This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of a structured teaching module in improving nurses' knowledge of palliative care.
Method: A pre-post-test quasi-experimental design was used in this study. Eighty nurses working at a public sector tertiary care hospital in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, were enrolled. Their baseline knowledge was assessed through Palliative Care Knowledge Questionnaire-Basic (PCKQ-B), which is a validated tool. After completing the pretest, participants engaged in a structured teaching module on palliative care. Subsequently, a post-test featuring the same questionnaire was administered to evaluate knowledge acquisition. Data entry and analysis were done using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 27. The data was analysed using the McNemar test and the Chi-Square test to assess the effectiveness of the teaching module.
Result: The study results indicated that through the teaching module, participants’ palliative care knowledge improved from 12.5% to 80.0%, with a P value < .001.
Conclusion: Nurses are required to have knowledge of palliative care to meet patients’ needs. Employing a pre-post-test quasi-experimental research design, 80 nurses from a public setting hospital in Pakistan were provided teaching through a structured module. Results indicated a significant improvement in their knowledge measured through PCKQ-B.
