Abstract
Background: The concept of advance practice nursing has already been established in many countries in the developed world for decades. But due to the changing healthcare system and high demand for skilled professionals, it is expanding very rapidly to other countries. For establishing the role of APNs in Pakistan and initiating their recruitment in the local healthcare system, it is mandatory to explore the nurses’ perceptions about the roles, expectations, and needs of APNs in the local context, to ensure the sustainability of this program.
/="/">Aim: This study intended to explore how Pakistani nurses perceived the advanced practice nursing role in the local context. Method cross-sectional descriptive survey was conducted in a private university and an attached university tertiary care teaching hospital in Karachi, Pakistan. Currently employed nurses and nurse alumni, regardless of their program of study, were surveyed, by sharing an online survey link, using email and social media platforms. The data were collected between August 25, 2022, to November 25, 2022. A total of 200 responses were received, which attained a 59.5 % response rate.
/="/">Results: The majority of the participants were female (n=128) baccalaureate nurses, having 1-5 years of experience and belonging to different provinces of Pakistan. The study participants demonstrated optimism regarding the APN role in Pakistan.
/="/">Discussion: The majority of the respondents were positive and agreed to the initiation of the APNs' role in the local context. Since the study participants were from a single university and hospital, there may be generalizability issues. Furthermore, this study will serve as a baseline for future research and there is a need for extensive awareness programs to engage other stakeholders for the establishment of this concept in the local healthcare system.
/="/">Conclusion: It can be concluded that Pakistani nurses are optimistic about the introduction of the APN role in the local healthcare system, and they reflected their readiness to work as APNs. The study's overall response showed the nurses’ interest to work as APNs and is encouraging for the initiation and sustainability of the APN program in Pakistan.
