Abstract

Background: The healthcare workers faced many physical and mental health challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. Hence, there was a dire need to explore the experiences of nurses and midwives working with COVID-19 patients in a resource constrained territory. To the researcher’s knowledge, this was the first study conducted in Gilgit Baltistan (GB), Pakistan, on this topic.
/="/">Purpose: To explore the lived experience of nurses and midwives working in a government and private COVID setting in GB, Pakistan.
/="/">Methods: A qualitative phenomenological study design was used. Participants were recruited from one government and one private COVID setting, through purposive sampling. Ten nurses were interviewed through a telephonic call, by using a semistructured interview guide, from 15th September to 15th October, 2021. These interviews were audiotaped and verbatim was transcribed and translated. Colaizzi's phenomenological method was used for data analysis. Results: Through analysis of data, three major themes were identified. These were fears and concerns about the COVID-19 infection, balancing personal and professional life, and challenges and difficulties faced during the care of COVID patients.
/="/">Conclusion: The intense nature of work drained the nurses and midwives physically and mentally, resulting in stress and anxiety. Counselling services should be provided to healthcare workers to safeguard their health and wellbeing. In addition, regular training should be arranged to prepare for any future crisis management.
