Abstract
Background: Triage systems are intended to be used by a certified emergency nurses. The precise and accurate triage holds an immense significance in emergency care as it’s a crucial indicator to prevent patient morbidity and mortality. The under recourse countries like Pakistan lack structured triaging systems and nursing expertise in triaging, burden of disease in LMIC indicates that 54% of the annual deaths can be prevented through prompt triaging systems (Siddiqui et al., 2020 ). To address this issue its imperative to understand nurses’ perspectives regarding triaging process to shape triaging process and ensure implementation of triaging systems in Pakistan.
Purpose: The Study intends to explore emergency care nurses’ experiences and perceptions regarding the intricacies of triaging process and examine the enablers and barriers which influence triage decision making of a triage nurse.
Methodology: The study employed a qualitative descriptive approach to address the research question by recruiting emergency care triage nurses through purposive sampling from a tertiary and secondary care hospitals which used Emergency Severity Index as a triaging tool. Study presents detailed analysis of 15 Semi structured in depth interviews of emergency triage nurses using Creswell’s content analysis approach.
Findings: The findings of the study revels three major themes: (i) Dynamics of triaging process (ii) Facilitators and barriers influencing triage decision making of a nurse (iii) Shaping triage systems. Themes were in detail explained through categories and subcategories in results.
Conclusion: The study significantly narrates the diverse perspectives and experiences of emergency care nurses regarding criticalities of the triaging process including the key role of nurses in triaging, the complex process of triage prioritization and key component of intuition in triaging. Study crucially highlights the challenges and facilitators impacting triage judgement of an emergency care nurse. Conclusively the study emphasizes over the recommendations on the substantial need for implementation and restructuring of triaging system in Pakistan.
