Abstract

Background: Clinical evaluation is one of the important assessment in nursing education, which assesses nursing students’ essential clinical competencies during their supervised clinical placements, and guarantees students’ safe and competent nursing practices. Globally, several studies have concluded that nurse educators find it difficult to fail or report those students who perform unsatisfactory practices. Literature also suggests that nurse educators face challenges at different levels, such as student, personal, and institutional level, in failing students who display unsatisfactory clinical performance. However, in Pakistan no studies have been found that discuss the challenges related to failing incompetent undergraduate nursing students in the country’s nursing educational institutions. Since, it is important to discuss this phenomenon in this part of the world, therefore, there was a need to conduct a study that explored local clinical educators’ perceptions and experiences regarding the phenomenon of failing to fail students with dissatisfying clinical performance.
/="/">Objective: The aim of the study was to explore the perceptions and experiences of clinical preceptors and faculty members about failing to fail undergraduate nursing students displaying unsatisfactory practices in their clinical placement, at a private school of nursing and midwifery in Karachi, Pakistan.
/="/">Method: A qualitative descriptive exploratory study design was used. Data was collected from 12 clinical educators, at the Aga Khan University School of Nursing and Midwifery, in Karachi, iv Pakistan, through semi-structured interviews. The data was analyzed using Creswell’s (2018) content analysis steps.
/="/">Results :Five major themes evolved from data analysis: (i) identification of unsatisfactory behaviours during clinical performance; (ii) system based challenges faced by faculty members and clinical preceptors that hinder their decision; (iii) emotional challenges faced by faculty members and clinical preceptors that hinder their decision; (iv) creating possibilities to further assist students; (v) way forward for overcoming critical challenges faced by faculty members and clinical preceptors. Conclusion :The study revealed multiple challenges faced by clinical educators while evaluating nursing students in the clinical settings, and failing to fail students who do not perform at a satisfactory level. Further, it proposes several strategies to overcome these challenges, in order to produce safe and competent nurses for the society.
