Abstract

Background: Burnout among healthcare professionals, particularly nurses, is a growing concern globally, with significant implications for healthcare quality and worker well-being. Hemodialysis nurses, due to the complex and emotionally draining nature of their work, are particularly susceptible to burnout. This study focuses on exploring the experiences of burnout among dialysis nurses in a public sector hospital in Swat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to understand the factors contributing to burnout among dialysis nurses, including personal, organizational, and cultural factors, and to provide recommendations for mitigating these challenges to improve nurse well-being and patient care.
Method: A qualitative descriptive study design was employed, using in-depth interviews with 11 Registered nurses working in the dialysis unit of Miangul Abdul Haq Jehanzaib Kidney Hospital. The Colaizzi phenomenological approach was utilized to analyze the data, ensuring a thorough exploration of the participants' lived experiences.
Findings: The study identified several key factors contributing to burnout among dialysis nurses, including high workload, lack of organizational support, emotional demands, and challenging working conditions. Personal factors such as marital status and professional experience also influenced burnout levels. The findings highlight the critical need for systemic changes to address these issues, including better staffing, support systems, and work-life balance initiatives.
Conclusion: Burnout among dialysis nurses in public sector hospitals is a significant issue that affects both the quality of patient care and the well-being of the nurses. Addressing the identified factors through targeted interventions can mitigate burnout, improve job satisfaction, and enhance overall healthcare delivery in Pakistan. The study's findings underscore the importance of comprehensive strategies that consider the unique challenges faced by nurses in specialized units like dialysis.
