Abstract
The Western world mainly operates within a patriarchal system which serves to subordinate women and results in social and educational inequality, based purely on gender. This has implications for the status of women both socially and educationally and may be detrimental to the professional aspirations of women compared with those of men. I would suggest that the traditional female role is one that has learnt gender socialisation and will influence professional development.
