Abstract

In 2015, the Lancet Commission on Global Surgery released a landmark report that emphasized that surgery is an important priority within global health, demonstrating that over 5 billion people worldwide lack access to safe, timely, and affordable surgical and anesthesia care.1 In low and middle-income countries (LMICs), 9 of every 10 people cannot access surgical care, with an additional 143 million procedures necessary per year. The field of global surgery, often expanded to global surgery, obstetrics, trauma, and anesthesia (SOTA), is defined as an area of clinical practice, education, research, and advocacy focused on addressing the unmet burden of surgical disease. The global neurosurgery movement gained momentum and has crystallized into a central part of global SOTA care. In this manuscript, we provide an overview of global neurosurgery in the context of global SOTA care. We characterize the pillars and stakeholders of global neurosurgery, delineate the importance of ethics and sustainability, and outline future targets for sustainable global neurosurgical interventions.
