Abstract

Objective: Ultrasound is an effective screening tool in the early detection of Lesion in breast and primarily useful for differentiating Solid, Cystic & Complex mass with or without Microcalcifications.

Introduction: NCDs accounts for 55% of the overall deaths in the Pakistan [ 1]. BC is a NCDs that affects all ages [ CDC2005].BC is the second leading cause of death for women worldwide [3] & Single largest cause of death for women in Pakistan. Pakistan has 1:9 women are at the risk of BC. Every year BC kills 40,000 women although it can be completely cured through early detection by BSE, MRI , biopsy[4]& BUS can discriminate benign and malignant masses with a high accuracy[5,6 ]. METHODOLOGY: Retrospective-analytic study was conducted at Radiology Department AKHWC, Kharadar during July2012 to June2013.

Sonography Criteria: BUS should be performed systematically using a combination of longitudinal, transverse, radial, anti-radial and coronal scans planes in order to detect pathological findings should involve assessment of: Size ,Shape ,Outline , echotexture, Posterior and edge through-transmission. Mobility and compressibility, adjacent tissues. Examination should be extended to axilla.

Results: 137[100%] patients underwent BUS. The incidence of breast pathology was observed in 36[26.27%] patients in our study. In which 03 [2.2%] were diagnosed as a cancer, result was confirmed by mammography-biopsy & patient took chemotherapy, while 33[24%] detected as a benign pathology; including abscess, fibro adenoma ,simple cyst , Lipoma, sebaceous gland abscess, engorged breast . Nine patients had Enlarged LN in axilla.

Conclusion: Early detection of lesion in breast by ultrasound to save the women’s live & to reduce the 40% death rate of women[7]. Recommendation: A dire need of educating women through mass media ,in Schools, Colleges & universities about the warning signs of BC, Teach them How to do BSE & early detection strategies by Ultrasound
