Abstract

This research investigates the factors affecting journalist retention at ETOP Radio, located in Soroti City, Eastern Uganda. Through a descriptive survey design, the study employs questionnaires and interviews to achieve its objectives. These objectives include analyzing factors leading to the turnover of talented journalists, exploring contributors to staff retention, and assessing and recommending strategies to boost staff retention within the ETOP Radio Human Resource Department. The findings reveal that a majority of journalists at ETOP Radio plan to continue their tenure, indicating a moderate level of employee satisfaction. The study further identifies strengths such as effective two-way communication, fostering a sense of belonging, and ensuring job security, all of which demonstrate ETOP Radio Management's commitment to employee well-being. However, some areas need improvement, notably in employee participation in decision-making, the management-journalist relationship, and compensation and rewards. The study uncovered an interesting aspect; the ambiguity surrounding the fairness of compensation distribution and its comparison with other media houses. The results reveal that although ETOP Radio offers medical insurance, the lack of clarity on compensation fairness is a concern. Additionally, the study highlights the presence of training and career development opportunities, yet their effectiveness and alignment with individual journalist needs remain uncertain. Another significant finding is the transparency and motivational aspect of performance appraisals at ETOP Radio. However, the connection between these appraisals and goal achievement, personal development, and promotion opportunities is not established. In conclusion, this study emphasizes the critical need for understanding the challenges faced by journalists, creating an attractive work environment, and fostering quality journalism to build public trust. These elements are crucial in ensuring journalist retention and enhancing the overall functioning and reputation of ETOP Radio.
