Abstract

Overview

As a doctor we are privileged to be trusted by our patients, their families, and indeed, the community. We deal with patients when they are vulnerable, are in need and suffering due to health problems. In this state our patients may not be able to express themselves coherently. Many problems in health care arise as a result of inappropriate communication resulting in dissatisfied patients and doctors. Therefore, for a mutually satisfactory doctor-patient relationship and trust in the Profession, the importance of good communication skills is paramount. Hence the responsibility lies with us to build rapport and steer the interaction in the patients’ best interest. To be able to achieve this outcome as humane doctors, we need communication and consultation skills of the highest quality.

Objectives

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to

  1. Employ effective communication skills
  2. Demonstrate Empathy appropriately
  3. Explore patients’ ideas, concerns and expectations
  4. Appreciate the social-cultural framework
