Abstract

Background: Pakistan is the 6th most populous country in the world, with 215 million people. This rapid population growth has become a significant challenge, as it influences the country’s social and economic development. The high maternal mortality in Pakistan is due to pregnancy or abortions related complications. With family planning (FP), the country can control the population, and abortion related mortalities can be managed by providing post abortion care (PAC).
Aim: This study aimed to understand the perceptions of married and unmarried males regarding FP and PAC, in Karachi, Pakistan.
Methodology: A descriptive qualitative exploratory research design was used. The purposeful sampling technique was used to recruit eligible study participants, including married and unmarried males. A total of 30 males’ participants were enrolled in the study, and the data was collected through focus group discussions (FGDs) and in-depth interviews (IDIs). Data analysis was done manually, by using the steps suggested by Creswell (2014).
Findings: Three themes emerged from the analysis of the FGDs and IDIs, which included (i) the male version on the understanding of FP and PAC (ii) difficulties for men to practice FP and v PAC (iii) men’s role in enhancing FP and PAC practices a missing link. The study findings highlighted that males had limited knowledge, a positive attitude, and willingness with regard to FP. On the other hand, they perceived that abortion was allowed only on the medical grounds, and most of the women could not avail PAC services due to unaffordability.
Conclusion: Males are the key decision makers in fertility. Therefore, there is a need to educate them and to provide them adequate information regarding FP and PAC. Male health workers must be recruited in the existing framework of the Lady Health Workers program in the community, to educate the male population. Stake holders must ensure to availability and accessibility of PAC services in the public health settings, so that women receive PAC services in a timely manner.
