Abstract

Background: Mastectomy is considered as one of the major present-day modalities for breast cancer treatment, which not only affects the physical and emotional well-being of women, but it also affects specific aspects of sexual functioning and intimacy between partners. These aspects highlight the importance of directing the attention of HCPs towards taking responsibility for addressing the sexual health needs of post-mastectomy patients, to improve their overall quality of life.
Study Purpose:The study aimed to explore the effect of mastectomy on the sexual health and marital relationship of adult married women at a tertiary care hospital in Karachi, Pakistan. This study has recommended strategies for HCPs for addressing the sexual health needs of post mastectomy women, and for improving their overall quality of life.
Methodology:A qualitative exploratory descriptive design was utilized in the study. A total of 12 participants were recruited in the study, through the purposive sampling technique, from a private tertiary care hospital in Karachi, Pakistan. Data was collected through in-depth, semi structured interviews. The findings of the study were manually analyzed using the content analysis method.
Findings: The findings revealed five major themes: (i) transformation of life after mastectomy; (ii) perceptions regarding sexual health; (iii) marital relationship after mastectomy; (iv) coping with the crisis; (v) responsibilities of health care providers. The findings revealed that participants had experienced decreased sexual attractiveness, arousal, and satisfaction after surgery which affected their intimate relationships. Those who received continuous support v and care from their partners were able to cope positively while those who did not receive support had difficulties in accepting the new changes in their lives.
Conclusion:The results of this study have provided significant recommendations for the HCPs, to enhance the overall quality of life of the survivors. These include the formation of a support group, employment of an expert sexual health nurse, provision of sexual health awareness, and counseling of couple before and after mastectomy
