Abstract

Background: School Health services are a branch of public health sector which provides health covers during school hours. SHS are unique arrangements provided to schools, to advances the health of school community and lead to academic achievements. School nurses intervene with students to provide health interventions like first aid, health education and immunization.
Purpose: The study aimed to explore the perceptions of senior management regarding the significance of school health services in private schools in Karachi, Pakistan. This study also aimed to recommend strategies to establish effective SHS in schools of Pakistan.
Method: A qualitative descriptive exploratory study design was utilized to explore the perceptions of senior management. A total of seven participants from private schools of each districts of Karachi were recruited, using purposive sampling technique. Data were collected through semi structured interviews. The findings of the study were analyzed using content analysis. A framework of 21st century school nursing practice from National association of school nurse was used to recommend the establishment of SHS in Pakistan.
Finding(s): The findings discovered three major themes: (i) concepts of school health; (ii) perceived barriers; and (iii) establishment of effective SHS. The findings revealed that, most of the participants perceived SHS as essential component for student health, however, there are certain barriers which hinders the availability of SHS. The findings also identified the strategies to establish effective SHS in schools of Pakistan.
Conclusion: The results of this study have provided three level recommendations: individual, organizational and national level strategies to establish effective SHS in schools of Pakistan.
