Abstract
Background: Post-Extubation Dysphagia (PED) is a severe condition affecting the patients' nutrition and hydration status, significantly delaying patients' recovery. Health Care Providers (HCPs), especially nurses and technicians, must be skillful and knowledgeable about recognizing the early signs of PED to initiate timely management.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess the level of knowledge and its associated factors among HCPs (nurses and technicians) regarding PED, in a private tertiary care hospital in Karachi, Pakistan.
Methodology: 134 HCPs were recruited from the critical care areas of a tertiary care hospital and their knowledge about PED was assessed using a researcher-developed cross-sectional survey.
Findings: Overall knowledge of the study participants, regarding PED was low. Nearly 33.58% of the participants passed the knowledge questionnaire. The highest level of knowledge was about complications (63.43%), whereas the lowest (31.34%) scored subscale was on the management of PED. Also, gender and area of practice were statistically significant predictors of PED knowledge.
Conclusion: The study concludes that there is a low level of knowledge among HCPs about PED, and there is a dire need to improve the staff's knowledge about PED through regular in-service sessions and workshops.
