Abstract
Introduction: The educational transition to university brings multiple challenges, which require adjustment and adaptation. For instance, the students have to familiarize themselves with the social and cultural values of the university, and to deal with the academic challenges simultaneously. Researches have established that effective transition leads to the retention of students and positively affects their overall performance. That is why institutions endeavour to make the transition successful, through various strategies. Peer mentorship is one of the strategies which has been found to be effective in assisting the first-year university students. Objective The purpose of this study was to explore the challenges of transition faced by the first-year nursing students, synthesize knowledge available around peer mentorship programmes, and develop and validate a contextually tailored peer mentorship programme.
Methods: This study utilized qualitative exploratory research design, combined with the intervention research framework. It was a three-staged research method, including an initial desk review of literature, followed by an exploration of challenges of transition, through focus group discussions, and finally, development and validation of a peer mentorship programme.
Results: The desk review highlighted academic, social, psychological and institutional benefits of peer mentorship programmes. It also identified a few recommendations, which had practical implications for developing peer mentorship programme. Moreover, the focus group discussions revealed academic, social, psychological, and few other challenges. Furthermore, from the qualitative data the need and nature of peer mentorship programme was established. Practical implications for development and implementation of a peer mentorship programme, v also emerged from the qualitative data. A structured peer mentorship programme was developed, based on the philosophy of care presented by a famous Nurse Theorist Dr. Jean Watson. The vision, mission, goals, organizational structure and implementation plan were carefully crafted at the outset. A peer mentorship curriculum was developed and the content was validated by seven experts and five students. The calculated S-CVI according to the ratings of the experts was found to be 0.79 for clarity and 0.76 for relevance. With regard to students, the SCVI for clarity and relevance both came out to be 0.95.
Conclusion :The outcome of this study is development of a structured peer mentorship programme, customized according to the contextual needs. This programme could be piloted in future through interventional research methods, to establish its feasibility and impact on the students’ transition to university. A school-wide implementation can then be done, utilizing participatory action research.
