Abstract
Objective :The study aimed to assess the healthcare providers (nurses and doctors) attitude, practices, and the enabling and hindering factor regarding reporting of PSEs, in the medicine and general surgery inpatient area of a tertiary care hospital in Karachi, Pakistan.
Methodology :A cross-sectional analytical study design was used to address the study question. The universal sampling technique was used to recruit a total of 270 nurses and doctors, for filling out the attitude and experience reporting questionnaire. Simultaneously, for practice assessment regarding self-reporting of PESs, a summary was collected from the hospital clinical affairs department, to analyze the practices of PSEs reporting of nurses and doctors, from the medicine and general surgery departments.
Results: The findings of the current study revealed that 60% to 68% of the HCPs showed a positive attitude that they should report minor and serious errors to patients. Whereas, in practice, 50% to 70% of healthcare providers (nurses and doctors) never reported serious and minor PSEs to patients. Moreover, 80% to 84% of the HCPs showed a positive attitude, that they should report minor, serious, and near-miss PSEs to hospital administration. Whereas, in practice assessment, 94 PSEs were self-reported to the hospital, out of which 93 were minor. Hence, the HCPs demonstrated a positive attitude towards reporting PSEs to patients, and to the hospital administration, however; their attitudes were not reflected in their practices. Moreover, few factors were identified as hindering or enabling in the reporting of PSEs; such as fear of legal or disciplinary actions, heavy workload, impede of professional growth, supportive colleagues, and well-established reporting mechanisms. Furthermore, there was a statistically significant difference between the professionals, the years of work experience, v and between two departments in the reporting of PSEs. Whereas, no statistical difference was found in the reporting of PSEs, with regards to gender.
Conclusion: The study identified the major gap between participants' attitude towards the reporting of PSEs practices. It showed that different enabling and hindering factors affect the reporting of PSEs. Moreover, the results highlighted that there was not a lack of skills but a lack of willingness in reporting PSEs.
