Abstract

Background: Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is a non-degenerative injury to the brain, resulting from an external mechanical force that alters a person’s normal functioning. Often, these patients require caregivers to respond to their long-term care requirements at home. Therefore, it is significant to evaluate the Readiness for Hospital Discharge (RHD) of caregivers of TBI patients, to prevent complications and readmissions. However, to the best of the researcher’s knowledge, no study has been carried out to assess the hospital discharge readiness of TBI patients’ caregivers so far.
Purpose: The study aimed to determine the level of RHD and its associated factors, of caregivers of TBI patients, in a tertiary care hospital in Karachi, Pakistan. Methodology: The study was conducted using a quantitative analytical design. The RHD of 150 caregivers of TBI patients was assessed using the Urdu version of the Readiness for Hospital Discharge Scale (RHDS) family/caregiver form, via a cross-sectional survey. Moreover, factors affecting RHD were assessed using a self-developed questionnaire, including characteristics such as patient and caregiver’s socio-demography, hospitalization, and discharge teaching practices. Multivariate linear regression analysis was performed to explore factors associated with RHD among the caregivers of TBI patients.
Result: The overall mean score of RHD of TBI patients’ caregivers was 7.12 (SD ± 1.40). In multiple linear regression analysis, the male gender of TBI patients, and discharge instructions on ‘activity’ were found to influence caregivers’ RHD, positively. Whereas, discharge teaching about ‘possible warning signs’ was negatively associated with increased RHD.
Conclusion: The findings from this study revealed that discharge instructions regarding activity and warning signs are key determinants of caregivers’ RHD of TBI patients in Pakistan. Hence, this study has future implications at various ends, such as healthcare providers, health educationists, and researchers, to further investigate and enhance caregivers’ experiences of their patient’s discharge process.
