Abstract
Background: Each year, millions of nurses join the nursing profession, with some gaining experience while others pursue advanced studies to improve their qualifications and personal development. However, many face challenges in higher education due to various factors, despite the availability of institutional support. (Labrague et al., 2021) While research in developed countries largely focuses on the challenges and psychological stress faced by nurses, there is limited evidence on the support provided to nurses in Pakistani universities, resulting in a gap in knowledge. Purpose: This study aims to assess the barriers faced by working nurses at Aga Khan University in Karachi, Pakistan, while exploring the enablers that support higher education. Method: This study used a descriptive exploratory design, conducting semi-structured interviews with 12 nurses and faculty members through convenience sampling to investigate perceptions of barriers and enablers of higher education at Aga Khan University, Karachi. Findings: The study identified two main themes: factors enhancing motivation for higher education in working nurses and factors deterring them. Participants aimed for higher positions, showing self-determination and motivation. They balanced responsibilities by prioritizing individual needs and seeking flexible learning support. Participants demonstrated hope and resilience, effectively navigating challenges IIIthrough task delegation, organization, family and colleague support, time management, and dedicated study time. Conclusion: Education authorities and policymakers should organize workshops on time-management and coping strategies to help nurses balance academic, family, and professional responsibilities. Additionally, implementing awareness sessions with career guidance services, along with scholarships and comprehensive policies, will assist nurses in identifying their goals and navigating educational options effectively.
