Abstract

Background: Domestic violence remains a pervasive issue in Pakistan, with financial dependence and lack of education acting as key factors perpetuating abuse. While skill development is seen as a potential solution for empowering women, particularly domestic violence victimized women, the specific needs and perceptions of these women regarding functional skill development have been underexplored. Purpose: This study aimed to explore the perceptions of domestic violence-victimized women in Southern Punjab regarding the role of skill development in achieving financial independence and improving their lives against domestic violence. It also sought to identify preferred skill modalities and barriers faced in skill acquisition. Method: An exploratory-descriptive qualitative approach was employed. Six women who had experienced domestic violence were recruited using purposive sampling. Data was collected by in-depth semi-structured interviews and were analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s thematic analysis. Findings: After thematic analysis, three main themes emerged as Skill for Empowerment; Perceived Importance in Redefining Lives and Future, Skills Preferred by Domestic-Violence Victimized Women, Trapped by Control; The Invisible Constraints to Skill Development. Conclusion: In this study, domestic violence victimized women emphasized the importance of skills in achieving financial independence, breaking down social barriers, and improving their children, especially their daughters’ future. They preferred skills according to their accessibility, needs, and education. Moreover, financial constraints, cultural restrictions, and a lack of family support were identified to be the challenges of skill development. However, increasing community support with the help of health workers, incorporating skill training into schools, and engaging authorities in collaborative empowerment can play a significant role in empowering these women against domestic violence.
