Abstract

Background: In the field of paediatrics, Patient safety is crucial in healthcare, particularly in pediatric intensive care units where patients are vulnerable and require specialized care. Adhering to safety protocols, Paediatric Critical Care Nurses are pivotal in ensuring patient safety by implementing evidence-based practices. However, their knowledge, attitude, and practice regarding patient safety have not been comprehensively studied in the context of tertiary care hospitals in Karachi, Pakistan.
Purpose: The study aimed to examine the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of nurses working in critical care units regarding patient safety in tertiary care hospitals in Karachi, Pakistan.
Method: A descriptive cross-sectional study design was employed to examine the pediatric critical care nurses' knowledge, attitude, and practices addressing patient safety in tertiary care hospitals in Karachi. The data was collected from 115 nurses within two months by using a pretested questionnaire. The data was entered and analyzed by using SPSS version 22.0 software.
Findings: All the nurses were recruited from the pediatric critical care areas with a response rate of 86%. The median age is 27 years, with a median of 3 years of clinical experience. The gender distribution was nearly even, with 47.0% male and 53.0% female. Regarding qualifications, 27.0% hold a nursing diploma, while 73.0% have a nursing degree. The nurses' level of good knowledge, positive attitude, and good practice towards patient safety was 94%, 96%, and 98% respectively. Clinical experience was a significant predictor of the practice score (p-value ≤ 0.05).
Conclusion: Most of the nurses had strong knowledge, positive attitudes, and good practice toward patient safety. The more knowledge the critical care nurses have the more positively they view patient safety enhancing their skills. Educational programs and training on patient safety should be continued so that nurses can maintain optimum knowledge, attitude, and skills regarding patient safety.
