Abstract

Background: Pain is a disagreeable emotional and sensory experience associated with potential or existing tissue damage. Pain assessment and treatment has vital nursing implications, as inadequate pain management has been shown to affect patient outcomes, including increased length of hospital stay and delayed recovery. The aim of this study was to identify gaps in nurses' knowledge and attitudes towards pain assessment and treatment.
Purpose: The main aim of this study is to assess the effectiveness of educational course on enhancing the knowledge and attitude of emergency staff nurses as measured by the pretest and post-test.
Method: A quasi-experimental pretest and post-test design was used to assess the impact of an educational intervention on the knowledge and attitude of 76 participants. The intervention consisted of educational course which was developed by pain experts. Knowledge was measured using a standardized multiple-choice questionnaire administered before and immediately after the intervention. Data were analyzed descriptively using SPSS version 26 to determine changes in knowledge levels pretest and post-intervention.
Finding(s): Participants' knowledge significantly improved after the educational intervention. These findings confirm the effectiveness of the course in enhancing knowledge of pain assessment and treatment. The attitude of participants were unfavorable but after the intervention it was towards favorable.
Discussion: The educational intervention significantly improved participants' knowledge of pain assessment and treatment, with the majority moving from poor to good knowledge levels. However, certain areas, particularly in pharmacological pain management, require further emphasis. These results suggest that structured education effectively addresses critical knowledge gaps but highlight the need for ongoing training in complex clinical areas.
Conclusion and Recommendation: This study revealed that nurses working at emergency department had poor knowledge towards pain assessment and treatment. the situation demands various educational courses that could enhance the nurse‘s knowledge which ultimately leads to positive attitude in the area of pain assessment and treatment.
