Abstract
Background: The health care system is constantly evolving and developing. Nurses are challenged with high patient acuity, technology advancement, and change in their roles and responsibilities. The nursing profession is a practice-based discipline, which requires hands-on patient experiences for integration and application of knowledge. The transition from student to professional nurse is a critical shift in bringing classroom learning to real-life experiences. Nurse internship programmes (NIPs) are developed to facilitate the journey of professional transition, and to socialize the graduate nurses, through proper supervision
Aim of the Study: The purpose of the current study was to explore the perceptions of nurse interns regarding their experiences during the internship period, in a tertiary care hospital of Karachi, Pakistan.
Methodology :The study was carried out using a qualitative descriptive exploratory design. The semi[1]structured interview guide e was used to collect the data, from a total of 12 nurse interns who had completed their one-year internship in 2019, until saturation was achieved. These participants were recruited from a tertiary care hospital of Karachi, Pakistan. Data were analyzed using the content analysis method. Results A total of four broad themes emerged, including: internship experiences, supervision during the internship period, factors affecting interns' learning during the internship period and recommendations from nurse interns. The participants shared their perspectives regarding their v experiences during the internship period; the perceptions varied significantly among them. Moreover, the participants indicated the way they were supervised on their clinical during the internship by the Nursing Education Service faculty members as well as senior nurses. They highlighted the factors that either promoted or impeded their learning during this crucial period. Lastly, the participants proposed some recommendations to improve the current internship Programme, for the future generation
Conclusion: The study findings suggested that the internship experiences are essential for a smooth transition and for building the competencies of new graduates. Implementation of the recommendations proposed by the participants will help in making nurse interns’ experiences more pleasant and will potentially be beneficial for enhancing their learning in future.
